Community celebrates local Black pioneers

Community celebrates local Black pioneers

With a beautiful Daytona Beach sky as the backdrop, the community, family and friends came together today to recognize local Black pioneers during a ceremony on International Speedway Boulevard.

Through a partnership with the Midtown Community Development Corporation, the 16 leaders are being highlighted on street banners displayed on International Speedway Boulevard between Nova Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. From former Bethune-Cookman University President Dr. Oswald P. Bronson Sr. to Turie T. Small, who has a school named in her honor, the community celebrated the contributions these leaders made to the city of Daytona Beach. Pictured at the podium are family members of Edward H. "Creamy" Hayes Jr., who is one of the local pioneers being featured on a banner.
