Join us Friday for a Purple Heart Ceremony at City Hall

Make sure to join us at 9 a.m. Friday morning for a National Purple Heart Day ceremony to honor the sacrifices of men and women who have been wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still presented to American service members. National Purple Heart Day is Sunday, Aug. 7. The ceremony will be on the steps of City Hall and is being presented by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Volusia County Chapter 316 and the Marine Corps League Daytona.

Dr. Bethune statue to be unveiled in Daytona Beach Aug. 18

In Daytona Beach, a bronze sculpture of Dr. Bethune will be unveiled at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in Bethune Plaza, which is at the intersection of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard and Beach Street.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the News-Journal Center there will be a premier showing of a feature-length documentary, which highlights the journey of the statues being created by sculptor Nilda Comas. The News-Journal Center is at 221 N. Beach Street in downtown Daytona Beach.

Midtown Music Concert Series moves to Cypress Park for last two performances

The final two concerts in this year’s Midtown Music Concert Series will be at Cypress Park, 981 George W. Engram Blvd., because of anticipated construction at Daisy Stocking Park. The next free concert is Saturday, Aug. 13, with a performance by 7th Street Band at 7:30 p.m. The final concert will be Saturday, Sept. 17 with Franchise Players featuring Andrew Luv.

Food and drink vendors will be onsite during the concerts. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs and coolers are prohibited. This year’s sponsors of the Midtown Music Concert Series include New York Life Insurance, VITAS, VyStar Credit Union and U-Store, Daytona Beach.

Due to popular demand, Ron White adds second show at Peabody Auditorium

Tickets are on sale for a second performance by Ron White, who added the additional show due to popular demand. The show is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Peabody Auditorium. Tickets are available online or between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Peabody Box Office. Ticket prices are $45 and $65 plus applicable surcharges.

Comedian Ron “Tater Salad” White, who first rose to fame as the cigar-smoking, scotch-drinking funnyman from the Blue-Collar Comedy Tour phenomenon, has long since established himself as a star in his own right.

White first stepped onto a comedy club stage in Arlington, Texas, in September 1986, and now, more than 35 years later, is consistently one of the top grossing stand-up comedians in the country. In fact, he was nominated for Pollstar’s Comedy Touring Artist of the Decade. His comedy recordings have sold more than 14 million units (solo and with the Blue-Collar Comedy Tour). He has been nominated for two Grammy awards, was featured in the Cameron Crowe Showtime Series, “Roadies,” and authored a book that appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List.

Enjoy free concerts this weekend at the Daytona Beach Oceanfront Bandshell.

Friday night there will be performances by “Back in Time,” which is a Huey Lewis & The News + 80s tribute band.
Front man Kip Sweeny is one of the best in the business, working for Universal Studios, Sea World and more prestigious entertainment and event companies on a regular basis. He is a fantastic interactive performer and vocalist, as he gets right in the crowd to get you on your feet dancing!

Saturday night, the Friends of the Bandshell present “Livin’ on a Prayer,” a Bon Jovi tribute band. Livin’ on a Prayer is an all-live band singing four-part harmony and all the hits. They also cover the 90s to today’s big hits too, but it’s big hair and fringe all the way! This amazing band has already rocked huge stages from Texas to New York down to Florida! Fireworks will be after Saturday night's performance at 9:45 p.m.

All concerts start at 7:15 p.m. There will be food trucks and vendors on site. The Bandshell summer concerts are free to the public with the option to purchase VIP seats for $10 plus applicable surcharges. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs to the concerts or purchase VIP tickets, which include a seat. VIP tickets are available for purchase online or between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Peabody Box Office at 600 Auditorium Blvd.
