Commissioners approve Hurricane Milton disaster relief program The City of Daytona Beach is offering disaster relief grants to qualified homeowners, renters and business owners for damages and expenses due to Hurricane Milton. City commissioners approved using American Rescue Plan Act funds totaling $1.5 million for grants up to $9,000 to help qualified residents pay for items such as insurance deductibles, home repairs, tree and debris removal and temporary relocation costs. Routine flushing of city water Starting Friday, the city is temporarily switching the disinfectant used in its water treatment process from chloramines to free chlorine. The city does this on a regular basis to improve the quality of its drinking water. Disinfection is a critical part of the water treatment process that keeps drinking water free of harmful microorganisms. During the disinfectant change, tap water remains safe to drink and use. Some customers, including South Daytona water customers, may notice a stronger smell or taste for a few weeks. The disinfectant will return to chloramines on Friday, Dec. 27. Here are a few tips to minimize the chlorine odor and taste: - Run the tap for a few minutes before using
- Refrigerate water in an open pitcher for several hours
- Add a slice of citrus or cucumber and let sit for several hours
Residents with questions concerning this procedure can call the water department at (386) 671-8815 or (386) 671-8009.
